“Nidus Balticus” Breakthrough in 2025: energy independence through basketball, dialogue, and communities

Apr 8, 2026

For “Nidus Balticus,” 2025 was a year of significant projects, partnerships, and organizational growth. The organization implemented large-scale initiatives in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia that not only reached tens of thousands of people but also encouraged active community engagement on the topics of energy independence and environmental protection.

“The past year marked a turning point for the organization – we implemented high-impact campaigns across the Baltic region, established meaningful partnerships, and expanded our team. This year has shown that we can talk about energy and the environment clearly, locally, and in an understandable way, avoiding polarization and fostering genuine community engagement,” says the organization’s director, Teresė Škutaitė.

Community Empowerment in Estonia

One of the most significant achievements of the year was the “Ida-Virumaa Vision” project in Estonia, where “Nidus Balticus” brought together local communities for a dialogue on the European future of this region. A series of events and discussions, along with the empowerment of local leaders, brought together residents, experts, and decision-makers to create a shared vision.

The result of the initiative is an alternative development vision that reflects the needs of the region’s residents and supports the transition to clean energy, while also respecting the historical identity associated with shale gas. This document will serve as the basis for further dialogue with decision-makers, business representatives, and community leaders, aiming to ensure that the voices of local residents are integrated into the decision-making process.

Sports and Energy Independence in Lithuania

In Lithuania, the organization chose an innovative path – by partnering with the country’s largest basketball club, Kaunas “Žalgiris,” the goal was to initiate an inclusive, non-institutional dialogue about the environment and energy in the regions. The “Green Stand” project, launched in partnership with the basketball team, engaged dozens of communities across the country.

The project culminated in a regional 3×3 basketball tournament in Raseiniai, where sports were combined with educational activities on renewable energy.

More than 100,000 viewers in Latvia

In Latvia, “Nidus Balticus” implemented a national communication campaign that promoted the adoption of renewable energy solutions in households by demonstrating their practical and economic benefits.

A series of educational TV programs and the “Most Beautiful Garden Shed Contest” reached over 100,000 viewers nationwide. Dozens of participants actively interested in more sustainable solutions for their households took part in the contest.

Regional Expansion

Last year, “Nidus Balticus” not only implemented successful initiatives but also strengthened its organizational foundation. An independent board was formed, a new director was appointed, and the team was expanded across all three Baltic countries.

The organization’s revenue last year reached 317,800 euros; the main sponsor of its activities was the Swiss organization “Our Common Home Association,” which incubated “Nidus Balticus.”

In the near future, “Nidus Balticus” plans to further strengthen its position in the region. Key priorities include new partnerships and large-scale campaigns, social impact, and fostering dialogue within communities.
